Movie Review: November 16 has been an eagerly anticipated date for millions of children and adults alike, as J. K. Rowling’s beloved novel, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” finally graces the big screen. Each of Rowling’s four Harry Potter books has received critical acclaim and become worldwide best-sellers, encouraging a generation of video-game enthusiasts to become avid readers. In adapting Rowling’s world of wizards and magic for the screen, the filmmakers were acutely aware of the high expectations of fans. They pledged to stay faithful to the book. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is, indeed, one of the most faithful film adaptations of a book that this fan has ever witnessed. The story revolves around an orphaned boy who, on his eleventh birthday, discovers that his parents were wizards and that he is, in fact, a famous and powerful wizard himself. Escaping from the clutches of his unremarkably ordinary (and non-magical) Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, along with their delightfully obnoxious son Dudley, Harry enters the world of wizardry as a first-year student at the prestigious Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A significant portion of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” serves as an introduction to this wondrous and perilous realm and its richly developed characters. Not only does the film need to cover a substantial amount of plot, but it also needs to construct an entire universe. Running at two and a half hours (a restroom break before it starts is advisable), the film captures many of the book’s most memorable scenes, bringing them to life with cinematic magic. The Quidditch match (a sport played on broomsticks) is far more exhilarating on screen than on the page, as are the bathroom encounter with a massive mountain troll and the life-sized game of wizard’s chess. The film maintains the book’s eerie elements and its PG rating (for some scary moments) should be taken seriously. Screenwriter Steven Kloves (“Wonder Boys”) effectively streamlines Rowling’s tale while preserving its essence. Director Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”) honors his commitment to stay faithful to the book. However, there are moments when the film feels somewhat too reverent, leaving one wishing the actors would let loose and have a bit more fun. Columbus clearly comprehends that fantasy works best when it feels genuine. Across the board, his excellent ensemble of actors is perfectly cast, appearing as if they’ve leapt directly from Rowling’s book. In the lead role, Daniel Radcliffe masterfully portrays an introverted hero who spends most of the film reacting to the astonishing sights and events around him. He effectively captures the profound depth and untapped potential of Harry Potter. And when this young actor smiles, the screen radiates with joy. Rupert Grint is charming as Harry’s sarcastic companion Ron Weasley, while Emma Watson nearly steals the show as their overachieving friend Hermione Granger. Kudos to the filmmakers for giving top billing to these three relatively unknown child actors. The film boasts an impressive cast of seasoned actors, including Richard Harris as the wise Headmaster Dumbledore and Robbie Coltrane as the lovable giant Hagrid. Alan Rickman is deliciously villainous as Professor Snape, and Zoe Wanamaker brings just the right amount of a girls’ gym teacher persona to the flying instructor Madame Hooch. Oscar winner Maggie Smith, in her role as the strict yet fair Professor McGonagall, seems born to play the part and is prepared for another Oscar. John Cleese (as Nearly Headless Nick) and Julie Walters (as Mrs. Weasley) make all-too-brief cameo appearances, but if the next film, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” remains true to the book, we can expect to see more of them. Aside from being highly engaging, the film is a visual marvel. From the bustling wizard street Diagon Alley to the gothic splendor of Hogwarts School, and the dark and misty Forbidden Forest, the film pioneers imaginative production design. In the words of the film’s tagline, let the magic (and box office records) commence.
